Naprapathic Medicine

Naprapathy is a system of manual medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of connective tissue disorders.

Particularly those affecting muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia and the spine. The term originates from the Czech word “napravit” (to correct) and the Greek “pathos” (suffering),

reflecting its aim to correct the underlying mechanical causes of pain and dysfunction.

The discipline was developed in the early 20th century by

Dr Oakley Smith, (Chiropractor).

Who recognised that many chronic musculoskeletal problems arise from restrictions and adhesions in connective tissues that impair normal movement and nerve function. Naprapaths use a combination of advanced manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisation, and rehabilitative advice

to restore functional balance to the body.

Today, naprapathy is practised internationally and is particularly well established in countries such as Sweden and Finland, where naprapaths are recognised as primary healthcare professionals within the musculoskeletal field. Treatment focuses on identifying the root biomechanical causes of pain rather than simply addressing symptoms. By improving mobility, reducing connective tissue tension, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes, naprapathy aims to help individuals recover from injuries, manage chronic pain, and maintain optimal physical performance and wellbeing.

This is the first and only course in the United Kingdom which leads to Doctor and Naprpathic Medicine Registration and Licensure with the SNND.

A Unique Program

The UCHSc program is unique for many reasons, and here are just a few.

The course can lead to fully Registered and Licensed Doctor of Naprapathic Medicine status on the SNND register. This is a public voluntary register that is reserved only for the best practitioners who have gained the appropriate level of both academic and clinical training.

The Naturopathic Doctor and Doctor of Naprapathy programs have the same level 1. So candidates can change between courses after level 1. Candidates can choose to complete an additional year in the other to complete a dual award ND DN with dual Registration and Licensure. There are no additional External National Examinations. They are not subject-specific. They only assess Biomedical Sciences, Diagnostic and Safety knowledge. The Therapeutics are assessed by the UCHCs.

Completion of the full course requires a minimum of 5100 hours. Of which at least 1750 must be practical/clinical training. This is equivalent to many statutorily regulated medical professions in the UK.

The program is fully flexible. Candidates can exit gaining registration and licensure after the completion of a level. This means they can begin their practice/business after the very first year. This will give them additional clinical experience and help them develop their practice/business at an early stage. Businesses in the Alternative Health fields take many years to develop into full-time and realistic businesses. We have specialist tutors who coach candidates to operate successful businesses.

Candidates complete a minimum of 1200 hours in levels/years 1,2 & 3. Totals 3600. Of which at least 250 x 3 = 750 hours are practical/clinical training. Candidates also complete a national examination at the end of each level/year, administered externally by the SNND.

In level/year 4 of the program, the candidate completes a minimum of 500 hours of reserch including thesis, and 1000 hours of supervised/mentored clinical practice across the full range of clinical skills required to become autonomous DNs.

External examinations, certificates, registration and licensure for 1 year is included in all course fees, so candidates really don't have any extras to pay for.

Syllabus

General overview of the syllabus.

The UCHSc follows the recommended syllabus of the SNND. This prepares the candidate to undertake and successfully pass the External National Examinations of the SNND.

In levels 1 & 2, the UCHSc group small units into larger modules for ease of understanding.

These modules are Professional Studies. Biomedical Sciences. Naturopathic Medicines. Clinical Studies.

Example: In level 1 Professional Studies, candidates will study Medical Jurisprudence. Ethics and Discipline. Hygiene and Infection Control. Clinical Waste. Health and Safety. First Aid, including CPR. Consultation & Case Taking. Clinical Presentation. Counselling and Communication Skills. Consent. Business Studies and Administration. DPA & GDPR.

In level 1 Biomedical Sciences, the focus is on normal anatomy, physiology and general health assessment. In level 2, the focus is on anatomy and physiology in pathological states. Learning aetiology, pathology, allopathic and natural treatment, including pharmacology and surgery, in contrast to natural therapies.

In level 3 the Biomedical Sciences become more advanced and applied to specific areas such as medical imaging and in particular reding X-rays, MRIs, CTs, etc and performing some Ultrasonography within scope.

In level 3, applied blood testing and other diagnostics are taught, ECGs, and candidates can progress towards an external First Responder in Emergency Care, FREC 3 &4 or the SNND equivalent.

For context, FREC 3 & 4 are roughly equal to the first year of a paramedic's training. This makes UCHSc graduates some of the best prepared and most employable in the UK. FREC 3 & 4 can be completed if they wish over 5 days each level.

UCHSc teach an eclectic range of manual medicine to DN undergrads. E.G. Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM). Manual Medicine. Remedial Massage and Sports Therapy. Medical Cupping. Kinesiology and Biomechanics. Applied Clinical Nutrition. Pharmacology and Some Applied Phytotherapy.

Many electives and research opportunities in other fields, such as Companion Pet therapies. Veterinary Massage. Veterinary Naturopathy. Canine Nutrition.

Teaching. Research. Mentorship. Herbal Medicine. Anti-Ageing and Age Reversal. PRP Injections.

Career Path

The career path of a UCHSc graduate can be varied and exciting. There are many opportunities in private practice. Integration into NHS GP practices and Hospitals. Some graduates have gone on to train in other health professions so that they can expand their scope of professional practice.

Some go into research, development, teaching and mentoring.

The UCHSc offer talented graduates the opportunity to train as professors and become the next generation of teachers, examiners and mentors.

There are many opportunities for post-graduate advanced training at UCHSc. We offer post-graduate courses in Medical Ultrasound. Surgical Electrology for minor soft tissue procedures (surgery). Natural Aesthetics. Laser and IPL Therapies. Integrative and Functional Systems Medicine. Anti-Ageing Therapies. Diabetes and Chronic Disease Speciality ND.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates up to age 21 are required to have;

6 x GCSEs grades A-B, including English. Maths and at least 1 Science subject. Plus 3 x A levels grade A-B, including at least 1 Science subject.

Candidates over age 21.

S/NVQ level 3 - 4 or its equivalent in a relevant subject. E.G., a subject with enough Science or Health content.

There is no advanced route for those holding degrees in science or health. A tutor will, however, complete a Recognition or Prior Learning (RPL) assessment and apply credits where they are due, so that the candidate doesn't have to repeat subjects. This, however, depends on the currency of the qualification, e.g. if it was obtained over 5 years ago. Candidates may need to complete it again anyway.

All candidates will be required to take and pass the National Examinations, whether they have had RPL accredited or not.

All candidates will be invited for an interview or an open day. They must pass the interview to get on the full course.

All candidates who will undertake practical/clinical training in the UK will be required to obtain a background check. This is required because there may be some clinical placements within charities and the NHS which require this.

All candidates on clinical practice within the UK will need to undertake Hepatitis B vaccinations and provide proof via a titre test result prior to undertaking clinical placements.
