Aesthetics Industry Changes in the UK
There are regulatory changes happening in the UK. This is beginning in Scotland in September 2027, but the rest of the UK will shortly follow.
We recommend that if you are considering a career in the Aesthetics industry, you seek professional career advice.
In Scotland, all aesthetics have now been classified into groups 1, 2 and 3.
As of September 2027, you will have to comply with new legislation; otherwise risk prosecution, which leads to a criminal record and a huge fine.
The information that follows is a VERY basic overview. This can and probably will change, so you need to keep an eye out for these changes. These laws aren't yet enacted, but soon will be.
Proposed Groups and what they mean.......
Group 1. (Lowest Risk). Superficial Chemical Peels (AHA, BHA, Glycolic Acid). MIcronedling below 1.5mm. Dermarolling. Non ablative Laser. IPL. LED. Cryotherapy. Radiofrequency. Ultrasound. Dermabrasion. Hydrafacial. (Suitable for Non Medics But does require a local authority license. Many beauty clinics doing this, already have this.)
Group 2. (Moderate Risk with Supervised Medical Involvement). Botox. Dermal fillers. Skin boosters. Polynucleotides. Lipolysis injections. Vitamin injections. Microneedling above 1.5mm. Mesotherapy and Electroporation. (Suitable for Non Medics but not independently any more, and Medics. These will need to be performed in a HIS registered clinic, with HIS registered staff, and an on-site independent prescribing medic).
Group 3. (High Risk Medically Administered Only). Platelet Rich Plasma. Ablative Lasers. HIFU medical grade. High Risk Dermal Filler areas. BBL (Buttock Fillers). PDO Threads. Subcision. Carboxytherapy. Sclerotherapy.
Therefore, when considering training courses in the UK, consider whether you will be able to practice. Even some medics won't be able to practice. Unless they are independent prescribers and fully trained.
Understanding what is happening in Scotland and the rest of the UK is vitally important if you want to work in aesthetics. This isn't law YET! But it's very close and probably will be. Up until then, there may be changes in categories and what can be performed, and by whom.
